First Major Treatment Plant Construction for Philadelphia Suburban Water (PSW) in 22 years
"Everyone involved worked very hard to enable completion of this project to accommodate the Pickering Creek East Treatment & Pumping Facility Tour scheduled during the AWWA Conference in Philadelphia." Morrison Coulter, Vice President, Production Philadelphia Suburban Water Company
UNIFILT AWARDED CONTRACT TO FURNISH AND INSTALL UNI-RATE MEDIA AT PICKERING CREEK EAST WTP
The UNI-RATE Media; (a low Uniformity Coefficient system), was specifically selected to permit the plant to be operated at rates up to 4 gpm/sq. ft. of 15 million gallons per day.
- (6) Gravity Filter - 15' x 29'
- TOTAL AREA - 2,610 sq. ft.
- SUPPORT GRAVEL - 18" depth
- FILTER SAND - 8" depth
- Anthrafilt FILTER ANTHRACITE - 22" depth
The Gravity Filters are automatic and controlled to hold a clear well level and backwash automatically on hours run, loss of head, or turbidity. The backwash is accomplished by two high volume low head pumps, one of which is necessary to backwash a filter, with the other unit on stand-by if a failure would occur. The backwash pumps alternate automatically after each filter wash.
PICKERING CREEK EAST TREATMENT PLANT TO BEGIN OPERATION IN MAY 1991
Customers will receive drinking water from the newly built Pickering Creek East Treatment Plant in mid-1991. The opening of Pickering Creek East, the first major treatment plant construction in the Philadelphia Suburban Water system in 22 years, will culminate a two-year project costing $34 million including ancillary facilities.
The plant has a maximum sustained capacity of 15 million gallons per day (MGD), but is expected to produce 10 MGD under normal operating conditions. Pickering Creek East is located in northern Chester County adjacent to PSW's already existing 40 MGD treatment plant now known as Pickering Creek West. The Pickering plants are ideally situated to help meet the growing demand of customers in Philadelphia Suburban Water's western and Great Valley Divisions.
WITH RESEARCH…INNOVATION CONTINUES
PSW continually searches for improvements in every step of the water distribution process. Studies to evaluate improvements are supported by a state-of-the-art water laboratory. The central research and quality control laboratory in Bryn Mawr utilizes advanced instruments that can detect contaminants in the low parts-per-trillion- range. The laboratory is fully certified for drinking water analyses and is called upon many times by other utilities and governmental agencies to help identify contaminants in water samples.
